The Polytechnic of Bahrain Project
A key project within the Bahrain Education Reform program is the establishment of the Polytechnic of Bahrain.
The creation of the polytechnic is part of wider changes to diversify and develop the Bahrain economy. A highly skilled and flexible labour force is an essential component of this strategy. Building on the educational platform already established in Bahrain, the polytechnic will benefit the economy by graduating Bahrainis with applied technical and professional qualifications to meet increasing demand created by growth in current and emerging industries. As part of its brief the polytechnic will also respond to requirements from wider government and community agencies for trained service sector personnel.
In order to serve these needs, the polytechnic will form strong relationships with key stakeholders, including business companies and industry representatives. Such collaboration is important to ensure that programs are relevant, that they are designed and delivered to respond to changing labour market needs in today’s highly technological society.
The polytechnic programme portfolio will reflect this focus and will benefit students by providing a wider selection of course types, a staircase to higher achievement and the advanced qualifications necessary in a modern society. The teaching faculty will be well trained, bringing both extensive work experience and subject expertise. Training in the latest adult teaching techniques will be provided to all tutorial staff.
The new polytechnic will offer applied qualifications through to degree level with a heavy emphasis on the practical skills directly applicable to the job market. A Foundation Studies programme will be available for students who need to top up their skills before entering study towards higher level qualifications. The polytechnic programmes will be staircased to allow students to exit into employment at certificate, diploma or degree level.
When fully established the polytechnic will have a wide diversity of post secondary education, including professional and applied technical education that contributes to the maintenance, advancement and dissemination of knowledge and expertise within Bahrain. Programmes will be modularized allowing for the possibility of people already in employment to continue to upskill by joining as part-time students.
Learning at the Polytechnic of Bahrain will be based on the application of new knowledge in real life situations and the development of students’ critical thinking and lateral problem solving skills within a Bahraini context.
The Polytechnic of Bahrain will serve the people of Bahrain, promoting personal and national wellbeing in both social and economic directions.
